Welcome Letter

Greetings ASHT colleagues and friends!

Welcome to the 2017 Annual Meeting Website. This year’s meeting holds special meaning and historic significance as it marks the 40th gathering of the American Society of Hand Therapists. Evelyn Mackin, PT, wrote in remembrance of the first Annual Meeting, “The history of the American Society of Hand Therapists began with a blank canvas gradually to emerge as an ongoing masterpiece.” Herein lies our inspiration and motivation to continue that contribution toward the masterpiece. Our theme reflects these sentiments and intentions in honor of our 40th Anniversary to be celebrated in Anaheim, CA: Inspired by Our Past to Imagine Tomorrow.

Our meeting will be held October 12-15, 2017 at the Anaheim Marriott within close proximity to Disneyland and many southern California attractions. The program boasts four clinically focused days, including four concurrent Pre-Conference Institutes on Thursday afternoon and a celebratory, clinically relevant opening ceremony Thursday evening. We will start the meeting with the foundation of what has brought us all together – science – and feature our favorite science storytellers in a panel, “They Blinded Me With Science,” featuring Maureen Hardy, PT, MS, CHT, Ken Flowers, Journal of Hand Therapy Editor Emeritus, and Jane Fedorczyk, PT, PhD, CHT. Dr. Douglas Ross will follow with the International Invited Guest Lecture on the newest cutting edge information on nerve transfers.

Both Friday and Saturday are lined with exceptional clinical offerings, expert panels and research abstracts. Friday highlights include the scientific session in the morning, and in the afternoon, the Nathalie Barr Lecture by Rebecca Neiduski, PhD, OTR/L, CHT, as well as the back-by-popular-demand “Articles of Impact Panel,” with this year’s theme “through the decades” featuring ASHT past presidents representing each decade in celebration of our 40th anniversary.

Saturday is a power-packed morning of concurrent sessions featuring several local physicians who are leaders in their specialties with the newest and most cutting-edge information in hand surgery. Dr. Mark Cohen from Chicago will then present the Invited Presidential Lecture on his most beloved topic, arthroscopic elbow procedures, with his close comrade, Kristen Grider, OTR/L, CHT, following with the therapy component. Saturday afternoon welcomes back a physician-guided cadaver dissection of the shoulder and elbow with Dr. Ajay Balaram from Chicago, then follows with the AAHS Invited Lecturer Dr. Brian Adams, who will cover surgical topics of the wrist including procedure demonstrations on the cadaver.

And what is a 40th anniversary without a celebration? Saturday evening’ 40th Celebration will be held on site at the hotel grounds including entertainment, food and cash bar. All are welcome with a discounted ticket purchase and we hope that you will attend to help us honor and celebrate 40 years of ASHT!

Sunday morning rounds out this exceptional weekend with clinical talks and take-home tips to ensure you have maximized your mind and soul during this fun-filled, inspiring and imaginative weekend in Anaheim. On behalf of ASHT President Gary Solomon and the Annual Meeting Committee, I encourage you to join us in Anaheim this October and continue to be inspired by our past 40 years to imagine and create the next 40 years of our hand therapy masterpiece.
